At no point did it say 'Once you install this Pro Tools upgrade, you'll find that you can't use any 3rd party audio apps.' So, the upshot... Pro Tools requires exclusive access to Digidesign hardware and thus it cannot be used simultaneously with other CoreAudio applications. I was using outdated drivers so I deleted them, and then I downloaded the latest Core Audio drivers from Avid and installed them.
